Tech And Tools – FrSky Taranis QX7S

Take Flight, Take Control. FrSky Taranis QX7S

First, I picked up the FrSky Taranis Q series transmitter after spending some time at the @GetFPV shop in Sarasota, Fl. I always appreciate the help from the good people there and the endless options for drone hobbyist and enthusiasts. After a few clicks, a few questions, and some tinkering around. I added the @FrSkyRC Taranis Q X7S + Hall Sensor Gimbals to my drone arsenal.

Secondly, after dropping the remote (bummer). I added a new switch pretty easily by buying a switch removal/replacement kit. I also purchased a few extra Ni-MH remote batteries for this particular model. The remote comes with a battery and Ni-MH charger and the QX7S specifically has a charging port on board. This allows access to the battery through the remote or transmitter housing without having to remove the battery.

By avoiding accidents and not needing to remove the battery pack to charge it, I can keep the battery protected at all times. This is really handy and reduces the risk of accidents occurring between charges.  It was a bummer to have to fix the switch, but it was good to get under the ‘hood’ and take care of it. If you need to tighten or loosen the gimbal pressure clips, you might want to do that while the cover is off.

Finally, our goal is to achieve price, serviceability, and scalability for 1-to-many, fixed wing and hybrid drones, including the – FV-31 Cypher micro quads from EMAX. There may also be other options such as Diatone Cinewhoop, tiny whoops or quadcopters that you can bind to this remote. With the success of our goal, the FRSky Taranis Q has been repaired, and now it’s time to fly. Although small, the Lego BORG housing is truly impressive. It is my own version of the BORG spaceship, capable of holding two IoT boards the  @Raspberry_Pi #RPi4 And @Qualcomm #Snapdragon410C. I have also included a picture of the original Snapdragon case by Arrow – Snapdragon. Additionally, take a look a touch screen housing by Arrow – Touch Screen Housing. Comparing Arrow to the Lego Board Housing, Lego wins hands down! Both devices are currently running the latest version of Ubuntu IOT OS, allowing me to easily flash/re-flash Android and Ubuntu if necessary. It’s pretty cool. DJI Gimbal Fixed, Let’s put the Phantom 4 through it’s paces.

Quiet morning, a great day for a flight test. We are here at the airfield to see if the recently fixed gimbal passes the test. Pop opened the box, placed a battery, retrieved the transmitter and headed to the launch pad. The goal is push this Phantom 4Pro, test the gimbal mechanics at flight speed and put the drone through its paces. We take the DJI Phantom 4 out for test run following its time ‘in the DJI shop’ for repair. See our previous post specifically on the gimbal issues. Unfortunately we were not able to capture video of the gimbal issues.

Lab Work – DJI Fix

Back To The Field FIXED. After 25+ days

I received some good news today, and even better news is that I got my DJI Phantom 4 ProV2 back from the repair shop. After waiting for roughly 30 days, it’s finally time to fly! The shipping and return process was a hassle, but I leave that for another post. Today, I finally received the PH4 in the mail, so it’s time to fly. I now have the package in my possession and am working on unboxing the drone as the excitement builds. Let’s see if the drone gimbal is ready for flight.

Gimbal Issue Resolution

Does the drone fix meet your expectations? This is the follow up article on the DJI Gimbal Issues. Sounds like the gimbal assembly was replaced, not sure about the camera or if the assembly is self contained, one unit; meaning the camera, gimbal and housing are all considered one replaceable unit. How long would it take to get the drone fixed? ~30 days. ReviewDJI P4ProV2 specs, make sure its your drone and in working condition.

At the airfield we pushed the drone hard, making sure the motors were good to go, a number of gimbal checks, gimbal, motors and lens filter changes. We can wrap up with a positive day at the airfield, nothing of significance to report. Just photos and videos to clean up, and clean out.

Update to come, will include video of the airfield, highlight different maneuvers and views. Or just check the above post…

Now that we have your attention, let’s delve into the DJI Phantom 4, gimbal issues, flight testing at the airfield, video and photography capabilities, and more. The same for our other drones, learn-to-fly drones, racing drones as well as maintenance and tips and hacks to ensure these drones stay airborne.

Repost – On The Bench with the Lego Tablet Base

Re-posting or the “Other Lego ‘Side’ Projects”, similar to the Gimbal repost (had to repurpose some content, goal was to better utilize material posted in various places around the web). So, I’ll start with the Legos®… Gotta love Lego® Other Lego ‘Side’ Projects.

  • Situation – Think fast tablet housing needed. We need a handsfree, desktop friendly table housing.
  • Challenge – Build a tablet housing (landscape orientation only) to house an iPad. Regardless of what the model or make of the iPad, we had an iPad, make something that will work in 5 minutes.
  • Accessible materials – Legos®, toothpicks, pipe cleaners, various
  • Go!

In short, we were  a quick solution with accessible materials that would allow for various solutions, an iterative build process, and be tabletop/desktop friendly. Another Lego ‘Side’ Projects we worked on was creating a new iPad/iPad case that was purchased separately did not come with a handy, integrated stand. This will a future piece of content. We may consider reviewing a few cases that have integrated stands, such as the Brenthaven.

Moving On

Moving forward, the case we purchased did not have any kind of stand included or attached.  It is a fact that buyers often regret not buying a tablet case with a stand. Before we move to close this article, here are some additional lego specific lab work and videos shared online. Learn about Lego train depot, Lego Tablet base and mini pc board housing.

In conclusion, we had several bins of Legos lying around the workshop and with a little creativity, we were able to create a fully functioning tablet stand/base. This was our first edition, and while there were second and third iterations that were abandoned due to instability and the number of Lego bricks used, the fourth iteration is currently in progress. We plant to reduce the number of bricks used and adjust the screen angle to accommodate various viewers and users. Additionally, the Lego Housing we are featuring needs to allow for both portrait and landscape viewing, as well as integration with charging cords.

Repack For Repair - DJI PH4

Repack Repair

Next, please keep in mind that ‘repair days’ are counted by the number of days the device is in repair.  ‘days in repair’. Additionally, it is important to note down time includes DJI facility time – pre, post shipment and travel time. Whether it is in the US (possibly CA) or abroad (** the total # of repair days do not include ‘in transit’ days… times are not presented online in the DJI UI – status tracker **). Just be aware, times aren’t always accurate. If you prepare for this inaccuracy, or system latency, you’ll be better off with some of the repair ambiguity. This information may come as a disappointment, but it is good to be aware of it now. From a customer’s perspective, this experience was a nightmare.

Just to clarify, ‘Hey, we don’t count the time it takes for the device to travel to and from the customer and DJI, we apologize for any confusion.  It is safe to assume that most of us, myself included, do not have a spare Phantom 4 ProV2 just sitting around. Perhaps the issue is related to a defective gimbal or defective gimbal motor(S). In this case, a brand new drone down for repair, back in the shop for a gimbal repair. Let’s bring this nightmare to a close and conclude the DJI Gimbal matter, as I would prefer not to encounter any issues straight from the factory. That said, let’s cut to the chase, here is a quick peek at the DJI Fix article some 30 days later.

Other Robot and Drone Repairs

Although this drone is under warranty or we may be ‘under-the-hood’ trying to fix this problem ourselves. That said, learn more about drone and robot repair? Read our series on the Maytronic Dolphin Down, in need of repair, under repair and Dolphin On. Excited to have the Dolphin robot back to work in the water doing work. Down time is money flying out the window, metaphorically speaking. More importantly, reducing your Return-On-Investment (ROI) – investment money to purchase a robot to do said work. Return higher than manual labor to keep the pool clean. I’d say this has huge potential for those pool owners looking for a little more in-the-pool time versus pool care and maintenance time. The reference is to engage or go, as stated by the captain of the ship in this case, the pilot in command. It’s okay if you’ve skipped Star Trek, or don’t understand the reference. No time lost per se.

I was flying a DJI Phantom 4ProV2, and wanted to share a few shots of the airfield. The club airfield (Venice Flyers) is located in Venice, Florida. I’ve added the PH4Pro Downloads and firmware links for archival purposes and in case of an emergency. Once again, that’s the Venice Flyers Airfield in Venice, Florida. Check out the club if you’re interested in the hobby of flying RC or quadcopter (drones).

For the purpose of the pictures, the goal was to put the drone through it’s paces, learning our flight area, boundaries and line of sight high’s and low’s… Here we had a chance to capture a few snaps of the airfield parking, airfield, flying space and more. Ideally, I want to share drone specs, photo and video quality and limitations. The PH4 Pro has a high quality video camera, can produce wonderful inflight and still shots, come-to shots, fast paced fly-to and follow shots. In my opinion, it’s one of the easiest to fly, learn and best video capture frames/speed sub $4K. The drone model and upgrades are a few years old now, with great video and photo quality. Kung Fu NES Video

“Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting”, Kung Fu Video

Kick & Punch, Beat ‘Em Up

Video – Kung Fu NES Video

Shout out to @NintendoComplete, for the great NES Kung Fu Video play-through.

Quick Take

Best Beat’em Up… games include Kung Fu, TMNT Arcade, Final Fight, and the Double Dragon Series… I don’t know about this one. Kung Fu was the first karate or martial arts game I played, so, maybe a broader category like beat’em up, action RPG, combat, fighting, boxing etc. would be a better pitch. In that case, the game tiles broaden to include the Street Fighter series, Mike Tysons Punch-Out! Batman, Castlevania (while I’m writing this, watching Rondo Of Blood for Turbo Grafx), Shinobi, Ninja Gaiden, God of War, Black Myth Wukong (a buy, so, a soon-to-buy) current the Elden Ring Samurai build, and Rise of Ronin (purchased, but not yet played).

Should I also include Rise, Rampage, Golden Axe, and Altered Beast on this list as well? I didn’t get into the UFC or WWF games as much, but Pro Wrestling yes. When considering all marital arts games, there are only a few: Kung Fu, Street Fighter, Virtual Fighter, Soul Caliber and now Elden Ring.

Returning to Beat’em Ups, martial arts, or whatever it may be and NES Kung Fu. I think Kung Fu is still one of the best games out there, even for a late 1985 release. Horizontal scrolling, punch, kick, and jump kick… a definitive “buy” today if I had a way to play the game. Nintendo Switch* I never understood the bee enemies or the fireball, bee throwing, dragon appearing enemy seems unfair or the final battle, guessing Mr. X. Silva saved. *Is there a Nintendo Switch in my future? We will find out!

Learn & Apply

Are you Results Driven, How do you become Results Driven?

Learn & Apply with ease

Being A Results Driven Organization

Methodology – Learn & Apply

First, Learn & Apply… What was your hypothesis? How did you test it? What did you learn from the test results? Any viable ideas? Did you retest and test again? Do you need to test once more?

Secondly, the challenging part arises: where do we apply our learnings? Do we cease learning? Do we work with others? The answer is certainly no. The question then becomes: when and where should you begin testing again once you’ve implemented a change, reduced redundancies, or enhanced system improvements? The time to learn is now. Or is it time to apply those findings elsewhere and make further adjustments to redundancies or system improvements? Does it sound as simple as that?

Thirdly, there are often more questions than answers, so it’s important to always strive to learn and apply new knowledge. If we stop learning, our progress may also come to a halt. Remember, you have the power to make a difference in your business, with your people, and for your brand. Lastly, we advocate for achievable changes and encourage continuous testing. We test, retest, and test again to learn from behaviors, analyze results, and effectively implement change.

Value Added Results

In The Lab - Test

Test, Test, and Retest – Finding value

Methodology – Test

Those of you who have partaken in usability test(s), have been to a usability center etc.

Many, many days spent in corp usability labs; fun times, good people. However, I felt sometimes the point was to justify change or boost numbers for change; in actuality it may have skewed the data. I digress!

Quickly, onto our fifth message here, this message is around ‘evaluation’ and ‘experimentation’… the value of, say an auto inspection, might reveal brake issues or failing tires. How often you inspect those tires or exam those brake parts, with determine cost of repair. How does this apply to your products and services?

Next, I prefer to test, (if money was no object), or I had the time to just test for the sake of testing I would do it. Fortunately, I’ve had the luxury of both. While working for myself and large corp. Goal is to find results both long-term and short-term, evaluations performed in my career. So, I guess the value in this article is the years spent testing, 24 years and counting. In that same vain, pilot studies, and small tests have value as well; working to reduce some cost, gain some efficiency over some defined length of time or duration.

Right? It’s probably why I test as often as I do, personally. The goal is to find  products and services that fit and make my life experience better or ‘buy funnel’. Oh, quick story, desktop vs mobile (those were fun, before mobile first or device agnostic design)… circa 1999-2000. Hundreds of users tested, mix results; more focused results were skewed as were the broader ‘organic’ type. Data is a funny thing. In hindsight, I can’t stress this enough, the value of analysis; is the value of the experiment itself.

Very High Level – Have problems, Find Solutions

I’ll keep it surface level, exploration is great for any number of things, seat belts, fire retardant blankets and safety clothing or fishing gloves. How would you retrieve your fish hook from a fishes mouth with out  kevlar gloves(I don’t go fishing without them). How about Gorilla Glass, how it splinters?  Apple Device failure, no warranty? Try for example, Apple Self Service Repair options will work for your situation. Or how much pressure it takes to cause a catastrophic glass failure. Or, take for example, a drone not working, DJI gimbal issue, we’ve got get out to the airfield and perform flight maneuvers requiring video or the act of actively capturing video in flight . Things I know to well.

I’ll confess, testing is a part of life, it’s how we learn. I would say often, do it regularly, try on your ‘off days’, try on your ‘on’ days and always retest if you can. The value is finding similarities to the experience you want your customers to have when they interact with your products and services. Re-do’s, as many times as you can; adjust your hypothesis, adjust your trajectory of change.

CBA – Cost-to-Benefit Analysis

Obviously in the real world, there is a point of diminishing return, but from a business justification, it’s a heck of a lot cheaper to fix a small sample assessment than fixing large, system level production changes; live. This goes for code, speeches, design, spelling, text messages, SMS, phone calls, or chat.

Lets’s explore the entire process, starting with hypothesizing (as highlighted in the previous article, active idea generation), then moving on to testing, learning & applying. We discuss these topics and more in our marketing and methodology articles covering possible changes, navigating challenges, improving vision, and knowing when to seek improvement or transformation. While there are many other topics to consider, let’s start here!

We enjoy brainstorming, storming, testing and finding results. Hypothesize more, or as much as you can. However, results are for another topic; thinking about what you want to achieve with your business is crucial. We aim to generate big ideas, building on them and offer great solutions.

The Scientific Method: Same Process Applies

Representing our brand with a variation or spin on the scientific method is just another way to approach things.  You may be wondering where to start, how to start, and who will lead the change. Well, it’s probably you.

The key is to begin somewhere, whether with a small or large change. The importance of hypothesizing is crucial when considering change. So, should we change or not? The question to ask is what cost, risks, and benefits are associated with making this change feasible. What costs are we avoiding my implementing this change? Check out our upcoming articles on our methodology, where we discuss hypothesizing, generating good ideas, and putting them to the test, thorough testing. The results of our testing guide us towards the learning process and the application of our findings.

Methodology – Growth and Transformation

How do you envision the growth of your business over time? How can you transform the business? With all the highs and lows, learning lessons… Grow wisely, grow locally and grow independently.

We selected growth (transformation and refactoring) as our first six foundational messages; growth represents the potential for change. Embrace growth, try something new today, whether right or wrong (in the sense of ROI), there is always room for growth. You have to find the growth. Invest. Take action with  Cost-to-Benefit CBA driven backlog leads to transformative change, making it scalable and always present in growth focused, forward-thinking business.

What’s unique about growth? The ability to change and transform your ideas and bring them to market faster. Anyone can grow, change, or improve. We utilize a well-known method for improvement, drawing from the scientific method, learning from failures, and relying on empirical evidence.

So, What’s Next

Nothing new, nothing transformative from a business model perspective. We find that successful change is deeply rooted in change itself, based on what you know today – empirical evidence. There are numerous studies, years of management courses, and extensive learning required to implement, work, and excel in any one of the 15 flavors of Waterfall, Agile, Agile At Scale, Scrum and so on. Why are there so many? Yes, we acknowledge that systems need to scale from garage to enterprise. However, we must ask why there are so many variants.

The answer is simple, making a system that fits your organization can have various outcomes, ranging from bad to good to downright ugly. It is crucial to hire the right people, require skills beyond completing tasks, have team members take ownership of their work, and follow a process of: hypothesizing, testing, learning and applying (said learnings). Yes, we believe it is.

Additionally, we believe in taking a pragmatic approach to incremental change, or in this case, incremental growth and transformation. We always acknowledge that failures can be difficult, but the key difference lies in the ability to learn from them. If you fail and do not learn, then it is indeed a loss. However, the silver lining is the potential for change that can result from the learning process, regardless of perspective. We see this as the micro-growth, transformative change, necessary to enhance your business, regardless of its size, level, or challenges.

What problems can we help you solve today?

Let’s cover artworks titled “Clockwork”… Made famous in the book A Clockwork Orange by english novelist Anthony Burgess. A grim dystopian look at a group of young hoodlums, hell bent on raising hell, in this dark world of ultra-violence made famous by Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of the Burgess classic in 1975.

Clockwork is a mixed media creation that simulates an automaton’s interpretation of street art, taking on the task of being ‘creative’. It incorporates spray paint, markers, a paper pad, plaster, and board.

The series consists of two small pieces, white on black duotone acrylics, each measuring 5″ x 5″. As mentioned earlier “together” symbolizes the importance of family, whether biological or chosen. It is the love depicted in these paintings that truly brings them to life.

Customer Request and Focus on Family

First, let’s start with client preferences and requests for the website – ideally, an optimized, easy-to-use, user-friendly, photogenic, mobile-first design. The goal is to provide customers with an online experience that mirrors the quality of service they receive in person. Personal care and customer immersion are two key takeaways and factors to include in the design.

It’s worth noting the business was a father and son operation, that covered the Southern Shore of Connecticut, Hartford, New York and Pennsylvania. It was a small two-man operation focused on providing residential and commercial expertise and care. The main focus was on customer service experience, with the aim of making potential new customers and returning customers feel valued.

The client wanted his customers to see the care and experience the craftsmanship and level of service for themselves. The goal was to help customers envision themselves in their new or renovated spaces upon completion. This approach helped maintain loyal customers and emphasized long-term customer relationships, friendships, and partnerships. Additionally, sharing customer feedback and recommendations based on recent work completed added a personal touch to the business.

Residential and Commercial Clients

Secondly, the point here was to highlight professional level/portfolio level work both indoors and outdoors including residential and commercial spaces. RG Way Painting Contractor offers painting services, general contractor services as well as handyman services. All services are of extremely good workmanship and are local to the Southern Connecticut market. The most important aspect of this work example was a quick portfolio site for clients to experience the  RG Way experience. This includes sharing more about the planning-to-construction process, including clean up and payment. The goal is to provide ‘white-glove’ concierge level services, finding the right solution for your great investments

Communication and updates were also included in the scope for RG Way Painting Contractor. Customer feedback, recommendations and advocacy are a must, has this client had over 25 years experience and loyal customers willing to share their appreciation of completed work. It is always great to see such great services, professionalism and care for customer needs. The Xpat Desk

Lab Work – Web Work

First,  a local for profit White-Glove Concierge Service. The Xpat Desk, was specifically designed for expatriates moving back to the United States. We assisted in building the marketing, branding and strategic message across various platforms such as the web, marketing materials, presentations, business cards and more (marketing collateral including logos, single-page websites, mailers, brochures, etc).

Secondly, our goal was to present one voice, exuding confidence and professionalism in our concierge service. We aimed to create a cohesive team with one brand. Offering the highest level of care while looking out for the best interests of the client, their family, and friends. Our services went beyond just helping with the process of finding and an expat’s next home in the States. More importantly,  the Xpat Desk provides assistance with furniture, clothing, storage, personal effects, and everything. All personal affects needed to establish a new home in the United States of American. The Xpat Desk is a white-glove service finding all products and services to welcome home expats.

Lastly, you will find the initial roll out of logos, showcasing a ‘door’ or portal symbolizing a threshold or new beginning. The slight shadow is meant to provide a subtle cue for services available day or night. We chose a traditional font style to blend old-world charm with modernity, symbolizing the journey from beginning to end, starting with a positive, memorable, and smooth conclusion.
